Can't find God in the usual places ...
churches, books or preachers' faces?
Keep on searching and don't give up,
You may just find Him in the eyes of a pup.

Maybe God doesn't care what we say we believe
As long as we manage good works to achieve,
Helping God's creatures and easing their pain
Without selfish motive of heaven to gain.

Joy without measure I know I would gain
If I had the power to stop all the pain
of millions of children and others in need,
If I had a wand that could wave away greed.

A wand to change man from his selfish bent
to one who would give until his fortune is spent
Feeding those hungry and suffering in pain
without any thought of personal gain.

But it's futile to rue one's powerless plight,
Or dwell upon darkness and ignore the light
of human kindness and compassion so true
That strives to help a poor creature or two.

Evangelists claim that it's faith that God wants,
Good works can't save us from the Devil's haunts.
But faith over works is hard to understand
when all God needs is a helping hand.

When compassion and love for all living things
results in behavior devoid of all strings
that tie action to promise of selfish reward,
May that be the destiny we all work toward.

Better to light a candle for one lost dog
than to curse the darkness of man's indifference.
Saving just one dog won't change the world
but it surely will change the world for that one dog.

An evangelist was extolling God's great virtues,
heaping fulsome praise and shouting hallelujah.
He exhorted those around him to join in adulation
and receive assurance of their heavenly salvation.

He paid scant attention to the creature at his feet.
It was just a homeless stray who came in off the street,
thirsty for some water and seeking refuge from the heat.
The evangelist was annoyed but kept on giving praise,
showing devout devotion with a steady upward gaze.

Suddenly he was startled to hear a divine voice say:
First get the dog some water, and then you can pray.

A wealthy person may regret
lost opportunities to aid and abet
in easing the suffering of so many,
failing to give much more than a penny.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am the thousand winds that blow,
I am the glints on fallen snow.

I am the sunlight on golden grain,
I am the autumn's gentle rain.

When you awaken in the morning hush,
I am that swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.
